Danielle Nash | There You Are Studio
Artist & Natural History Illustrator
Danielle Nash is an Australian artist and natural history illustrator living and working in Avalon Beach, on Garigal Country.
Drawn to the smallest and often overlooked wonders of the natural world, her practice explores the extraordinary beauty and complexity of the things we so easily pass by. From the delicate architecture of an insect's wing to the intricate textures of a tree's bark, Danielle magnifies these quiet details, inviting others into a world that has always held her fascination.
Working primarily in watercolour, gouache and graphite, her work draws on the rich tradition of scientific illustration, when art played an essential role in documenting, understanding and revealing the natural world.
Combining scientific accuracy with expressive, painterly techniques, Danielle celebrates both the precision of observation and the beauty of the handmade. Through collaborations with scientists and researchers, she contributes to the documentation and understanding of Australia's extraordinary biodiversity, with a particular affection for native insects and the species that are so often misunderstood or overlooked. She is currently illustrating The ABC of Australian Bees, a celebration of Australia's remarkable native bees.
Her creative practice also extends into music, culture and storytelling. As resident artist for Australian musician Katie Noonan, and through collaborations with musicians, filmmakers, charities and individuals, Danielle creates work that brings together natural history, personal narratives and the arts. Her intricate mandalas weave botanical illustrations, creatures and meaningful objects into compositions that celebrate the connections between the smallest of things.
The name There You Are Studio reflects Danielle's own journey towards an artistic practice free from expectations of what contemporary art ought to be. In returning to the subjects that have fascinated her since childhood, she has found a language that is entirely her own.
At its heart, her work is an invitation to look a little closer, to discover the extraordinary within the ordinary, and to recognise the quiet significance of even the smallest things.
